“NOW IT shall be, if you diligently listen to and obey the voice of the Lord your God, being watchful to do all His commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth”.
Deuteronomy 28:1 AMP
The word “Hearken” is derived from two words, “Hear” and “Ken”. To hear simply means to perceive or receive an information. Another word that best represent the word “Hear” is “Listen”. To hear or listen don’t just mean through speech, in the case of perception it involves any medium part of the five senses. Listening involve allowing yourself to be led by the Spirit of God.
To “Ken” or Obey means to conceive, begat, develop or ‘TO DO’. The end product of our hearing the voice of the Lord is for us to then obey. If you listen to the voice of the Lord and then choose not to obey then you are not different from those who didn’t even listen to the voice of the Lord.
“It is better to be in complete ignorance than for you to know and not do”
The children of Israel knew that there is “the way” (the right path) in which they should walk in and the things they need to do. (Jeremiah 42:3)
They knew that there is “the reward for disobedience” (Jeremiah 42:5)
They knew that the pathway of God can be either pleasant or unpleasant. (Jeremiah 42:6)
They knew that things will go well with them if they listen to and obey the voice of the Lord.(Jeremiah 42:6b)
This was why God God punished them. It is better to be in complete ignorance than for you to know and not do. The children of Israel made a choice to disobey instead of obeying God.
The consequences of disobedience (Deuteronomy 28:15-68)
To “Hearken” means to listen and obey, to listen and act upon, to give heed to what is uttered. Hearken is first listening to God and then doing all that He has said.
According to our anchor scripture (Deuteronomy 28:1), God is saying that we should not just hearken but “Hearken Deligently”. To be diligent is to act upon an instruction or task with intense concentration, focus and responsible regard. Hearken diligently not carelessly or negligently.
When we are prompted by God to do certain things, we should do it carefully, consciously, with the whole of our heart and as a mandate. Most times when God ask us to do certain things, what he is actually after is our attitude towards doing it. God can tell a person to give out his best pair of shoe not that God cannot afford a pair of shoe, but He may just want to discipline that person and then see his reactions. God is the source of true riches, He provided manna for the children of Israel daily for 40 years without them labouring (Exodus 16:35).
Deligence makes the difference. It is better for a man to be in complete ignorance than for him to know what to do and not do it diligently.
THE VOICE OF THE LORD
“Now it shall be, if you diligently listen to and obey the voice of the Lord your God, being watchful to do all His commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth”. Deuteronomy 28:1 AMP
The voice of the Lord represent instructions from God. We listen to the voice of the Lord through his word (written or spoken), his commandments and also through what he reveal to us in our Spirit. Without instructions obedience donot exist. We can choose to obey only after an instruction is passed.
“We can only hearken when an instruction is passed. And you can only get instructions when you are positioned in alignment with the Holy Spirit”
The bible is a prophetic book, a user guide for believers to run their Christian race. In the Bible are instructions from God to the past apostles, prophets and others who worked with God. They received those instructions because they were positioned in alignment with God. Moses needed to first be prepared, aligned, trained to hearing the voice of the Lord before he was sent to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. Anyone who operate without being first trained to decern or know the voice of the Lord lacks understanding.
God can speak to anybody but not the same way. God works with strategy. The strategy for Moses when it was time to cross the red was that through his rod (Exodus 14), the red sea will path, when it was time for Joshua to lead the people through it was for him to lead them in front and then the river pathed (Joshua 3). But when it was time for Jesus the strategy was for Him to walk on water (Matthew 14:24-25).
Don’t copy strategy, receive strategy from God.
When Joshua was about to cross river Jordan, if he wasn’t positioned in alignment with God he might have just looked for any rod and stretch it and the water might not path. But God told him the strategy to cross the river Jordan at that time because he was positioned in alignment, he was connected.
As children of God, God can speak to us anytime. We have to stay connected to hear him.
All forms of hearing is important, if you say that you only hear God speaking to you when you read your Bible, what then happens when you are not with a Bible?
We need to always stay aligned with the HolySpirit. What we do between the period of fellowship with God early in the morning and late at night matters alot. If a person start his day praying and meditating on the word of God and after doing that he left thinking his fellowship continues when he returns to his secret place, then that person might become a victim of the devil if he is not allowing himself to be led by the Holy Spirit. Our fellowship with God should be consistent (John 15:4b).
“the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine”
Our fellowship with God should be consistent not ‘pause and play’. consistent or continuous fellowship with God keeps us aligned and enable us to bear good fruit (do the will of God).
In conclusion, Jesus is the way to alignment with God. If you will not come to God through Jesus, you cannot be aligned with God. Jesus is the way to upright standing with God. If you are ready to make this decision or you want to rededicate your life back to him say this “Lord Jesus I believe in you, that you died for me, so I can be restored to Uprightness in the sight of God. Please Lord I ask that you come into my heart today, take over, I am yours and you are mine. Thank You for Saving me, Amen.”
