Apostasy is the subtly deviation from the truth (faith), paying attention instead to deceitful and seductive spirits and doctrine of demons. It is the rejection of Christ by one who used to be a Christian. It’s when one who confessed Jesus as his savior go back on his words and denounces Christ as his savior….. It is important that you read the full article on apostasy before you continue reading this article so you will understand the context in details. In this article we will be looking at 5 basic ways to prevent personal apostasy.
- LOVE GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND (LUKE 10:27)
Since the foundational cause of Apostasy is that people love pleasures of this world more than they love God (2 Timothy 3:4), so the primary solution to the error of Apostasy is that those who have fallen into this error should return to God their first love. If you really love God more than you love yourself, it will be impossible to fall for this error. Return to God He is willing and able to cleanse you, come like the prodigal son He won’t condemn you, He won’t reject you, He said:
All whom My Father gives (entrusts) to Me will come to Me; and the one who comes to Me I will most certainly not cast out [I will never, no never, reject one of them who comes to Me].’’ – John 6:37 (AMP)
Luke 10:27a He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’. (NIV)
For those that have not fallen for this error it is important that you examine yourself. Is your love for God or the things of God beginning to wax cold? Pray that God should strengthens your conviction, that God should help you to love Him more than you do now.
- ALWAYS ABIDE IN GOD (JOHN 15:6)
To abide means to stay, reside, remain, live, dwell e.t.c. To Abide in God means to dwell in God. John 15:4 says:
AMP: Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me.
For you to remain what God wants you to be, you have to stay connected to Him. The key thing that can make you stand firm in your faith is that you abide in God always. Psalm 91:1 says:
AMP:He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand].
Note the highlighted word ‘remain stable and fixed’. From this scripture we see that the place of abiding is the secret place. I.e. it is when you dwell in the secret place of the most High that you will remain stable and fixed in His shadow (under His protection). Your stay or abiding in God is a sure guarantee for you to stand firm. Even when the devil comes with his deception, there is a consciousness in you, an inner witness that will help you overcome every of his temptations.
The fact is that if you love God with all your heart, you will always want to abide in Him. So stay connected! Always abide in God for you to prevent personal ‘Apostasy’.
- ALWAYS BE A DOER OF GOD’S WORD
To “Hearken” means to listen and obey, to listen and act upon, to give heed to what is uttered. Hearken is first listening to God instructions and then doing all that He said.
According to Deuteronomy 28:1;
“NOW IT shall be, if you diligently listen to and obey the voice of the Lord your God, being watchful to do all His commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth”. (AMP)
God is saying that we should not just hearken but “Hearken Diligently. To be diligent is to act upon an instruction or task with intense concentration, focus and responsible regard. Hearken diligently not carelessly or negligently.
James 1:22 “But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth].” (AMP)
As children of God, we are expected to live by the written and spoken (revealed) Word of God. Many who fall into the error of apostasy are those who refuse to act out and live by the written and revealed Word of God. They have turned the Bible into a religious book just like those Pharisees in scriptures who are always against Jesus. We must listen to God’s word and do it diligently. It may look very difficult, that’s why His strength is available, access His strength which is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Diligence makes the difference. It is better for a man to be in complete ignorance than for him to know what to do and not do it diligently.
- BE SPIRITUALLY CONSCIOUS ALWAYS
Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and peace [both now and forever]. – Romans 8:6 (AMP)
It takes God (The Holy Spirit) Himself to keep us in line with God (The Father and Son), through constant fellowship with Him. It has been said that apostasy is a spirit (the spirit of the antichrist), so the battle against this spirit is spiritual. You don’t fight spiritual battles with canal weapons, you will be defeated even before you start (Ephesians 6:12, 2 Corinthians 10:4). Our victory over this spirit is precise. We have an advantage because He that is in us is greater than he (the spirit of apostasy) that is in the world (1 John 4:4):
AMP: Little children, you are of God [you belong to Him] and have [already] defeated and overcome them [the agents of the antichrist], because He Who lives in you is greater (mightier) than he who is in the world.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, He knows the mind of the father and the Son. He has been even before this spirit ever existed (Genesis 1:2). He knows every tactics of this spirit against believers. Therefore, in order to remain in uprightness with God we must walk continually in the Spirit, allow yourself to be led by Him and depend totally on His leading (Romans 8:14, Galatians 5:16).
To walk in the Spirit means to be guided by the Holy Spirit and to be obedient when He prompt you to do the will of God. For you to be spiritually conscious you must be able to speak the language of the Spirit (Romans 8:26-28).

- STAY AWAY FROM CHURCHES WITH IMBALANCED DOCTRINES
The gospel of Grace (Ephesians 2:8), the word of faith (Romans 10:7), the gospel of Holiness (Hebrews 12:14), the gospel of prosperity, the gospel of power and charismatic move of the Spirit (Acts 1:8, 2:1, Matthew 10:1), the gospel of the kingdom and other gospels preached are not meant to stand on their own, but to complement each other. The imbalance is if we take one out of these gospels and establish a doctrine only centered on it, without recognizing the fact that each of this doctrine will lead us into error, if it is not balanced with other gospels.
“The Gospel is balanced when it is complete”
Rich people hate the gospel of holiness because they are not clean, anointed people hate teaching on character, poor people hate prosperity gospel, those with good character hate teaching on the charismatic move of the Holy Spirit. All these causes imbalance in the body of Christ. It is true that everything we need or will ever need has been provided for us but the bible says they are in heavenly places in Christ, so we must study these principles to make them our reality, one of which is through our faith. It is not the will of God that we remain poor as children of God because the bible says in 3 John 1:2;
God is not glorified when we are poor or when we do not have true prosperity. We are not citizens of this world, Yes, but we have been restored back to dominate, subdue this earth. We must work to establish the kingdom of God on earth and not be subdued.
Some misinterpret what eternal salvation really is, they preach that when we are saved we do not need to do anything to keep us in righteousness i.e. a man believe in the Christ, he is saved but still goes around drinking thinking it doesn’t matter with the ideology that whatever he does, he is not committing sin against his spirit. The end product of our faith on earth is the saving of our soul that is why we need to keep renewing our mind (beholding the word) so we gradually become transformed to the image of Christ (Romans 12:2, 2 Corinthians 3:18). If after new birth we don’t need to do any other thing on earth then as soon as we give our life to Christ, we should have leaved this world and go to be with God.
Some don’t even believe that there are demon spirits operating on earth. That after new birth we do not still need to work out our salvation (Philippians 2:12). Being born again is the first form of deliverance but that’s not all because when we are saved, the part of us that is saved is our spirit, our spirit man is renewed, transformed. Our physical body do not change, our mindsets doesn’t change completely. At new birth, we receive the life of Christ in our spirit but we need to walk in it. Subjecting our soul to our spirit, so the end product of this will lead to the saving (salvation) of our soul (1 peter 1:9).
In conclusion, as followers of Christ it is important that we prevent this error by taking heed to these principles because not many who have fallen into this error came out of it. It only takes the Grace of God and His mercies so if you are reading this article and you realize that you have fallen into this error then return to God today.
